The King's Daughters Website Redesign

The King’s Daughters is the founding organization of Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). The mission of The King’s Daughters is to support CHKD by providing volunteers, funds, and advocacy to ensure that all children in the community of Hampton Roads are treated and cared for by the best medical professionals and state-of-the-art equipment. The King’s Daughters is comprised of over 40 Circles who are volunteers that work together organizing numerous events every year to help raise money for CHKD. These Circle events are in addition to the large annual events that are organized by The King’s Daughters' staff.

Challenge

The King’s Daughters was unhappy with their previous website’s outdated design and inability to easily maintain their content and events on their home-grown CMS. This was no small challenge since all of the 40+ Circles relied on the King’s Daughters' staff to keep their content up to date as well.

Solution

Marathon was engaged to update the design to truly demonstrate who The King’s Daughters are, focusing on their rich history and the many things that they do to support children of the community. Marathon created a modern, responsive design and implemented Umbraco as the content management system (CMS) so that the King’s Daughters' staff could easily keep the content up to date. To solve the bottleneck of content updates for the Circles, Marathon implemented a content section for each Circle and appointed a content editor for each, allowing the Circles the ability to control the content for their section.

The driving force behind The King’s Daughters' fundraising is the many events they hold each year. These are core events such as The RunWalk for the Kids, Moonlight & Mistletoe, and Breakfast with Santa.  Each of the 40+ Circles also hold events to raise money. Marathon implemented an event listing and registration module within Umbraco that was flexible enough to handle both core and Circle events, also allowing for other types of fundraising events and/or donations.
