Why Marathon Consulting was Formed
The Marathon founders spent decades providing Information Technology Consulting services to commercial firms, local governments, and non-profit
organizations in Hampton Roads and the surrounding area. During that time, the IT community underwent numerous
changes brought about by the rise of the mini-computer, the PC, and emerging network technologies. The business
community also transformed. Several large company headquarters, with sizable IT departments, left the area,
either through buyouts, relocations, or company consolidations. The resulting IT community is now dominated by
“Mid-tier” firms: those with under $200 million in annual revenues and IT shops of 20 FTEs or less.
These organizations often have a difficult time purchasing services from the national IT firms: their projects are
simply too small. In our view, this leaves Hampton Roads and the surrounding communities underserved. Local
organizations often must choose between small, relatively inexperienced local firms who lack the breadth of
services to ensure continuity, or remote firms, whose lack of proximity makes project execution difficult, and
ongoing support expensive.
Marathon Consulting fills this gap very effectively by bringing broad, world-class experiences, a superior consulting staff,
flexibility, and partner relationships to meet client needs.
